Vào những năm 90, người dân Hồng Kông rất say mê bộ môn đua ngựa. Trong bối cảnh đó, Lý Đại Hữu (do Huỳnh Nhật Hoa đóng) là một thanh niên nghèo khó nhưng luôn phấn đấu mở trường đua ngựa khổng lồ. Nguyên tắc sống của Hữu là “người lớn làm việc lớn”. Anh thường có những sáng kiến không bình thường, muốn làm điều gì là phải làm đến cùng, không mệt mỏi. Trong khi đó, Trịnh Kế Phụng (do Doãn Dương Minh đóng) có tư chất tầm thường, hướng nội và ít nói. Anh từng bị người thân hắt hủi, phải sống trong cô độc và đau buồn. Tuy nhiên, Phụng cũng là người cương trực, ngoan cường, có thù ắt trả, có ân ắt báo.
